Model Attraction to Size Zero

Many people are not striving to be a skinny size zero, although some people in the world are naturally small built and slim more more celebrities are striving to achieve this uk size 4 through unhealthy means including; excessive exercise, coffee/diet coke drinking, smoking.
There has been alot of controversy around this in the press regarding the fashion industry due to several models dying because of their child like weight.  One example of this is Luisel Ramos who died of a heart attack in 2006 when she was due to be on the cat walk.  Ramos has been told to lose even more weight even though she was already at a very low weight, she has been only eating salads at the time of her death as she was striving to stay at a size zero, when she died she weighed only 97 pounds which was incredibly low for her 5'9" stature.

Died at the mere age of 22 years old due to her fight to be size 0

From researching the different form of beauty throughout the world, it got me thinking more about what affects this has on children today.  This is where I decided to look into bullying and what is going on in the world today.  When I attented my comprehensive school- Pentrehafod, there were two girls who commited suicide, yes there were multiple reasons contributing to them doing this to themselves but when we were informed of thier suicide we were informed both girls were being bullied and had been suffering with depression.   This is one of the ways in which I found my sense of place within my project.  I then decided to add some true stories to my project to display the consequences of bullying.

Project Progress

So far my ICT project has been mainly cutting and sticking but now I have moved on to including more facts and references.  I can see the whole idea coming together and finding more ways for it to branch off.  My intial idea was "What is Beauty" this then branced off to different forms of beauty in different countries, also about pressures and influences in the media.  After further research I found a website that discuesses beauty throughout the times

Is this a good look?

Within the fashion industry models are getting thinner and thinner.  This link above is an article on a Romanian model with a 20 inch waist, giving the girl an "hourglass figure".

Is this the kind of thing we want the future generations to aspire to look like; surely there are health repercussions to come along with such a small waist.

After researching cosmetic surgery in teenagers further after seeing the case of the "Human Barbie" injecting her 15yr old daughter, I found an even more shocking story from the United States where a mother injected her daughter with botox at the age of 8 because she thought it would enhance her chances of winning in a childrens beauty pageant. After following up my reasearch I have found out social services have been involved and are taking action against the mother.....

Plastic Surgery for Children???

Plastic surgery is becoming an addiction and that addiction is now affecting todays youth. If you click on the link below you will see a clip of the self proclaimed "Human Barbie". She has spent over £500,000 on cosmetic surgery and now has her "enhancements" done free of charge as long as she recommends the surgeon. What is the world coming to???
Within the link the "Human Barbie" aka Sarah Burge tries to convince her audience she is justified in injecting botox into her 15 year old daughters face.....

Project Slight Change

Initially I had decided to give my poject the title of Vanity.... after researching beauty in different cultures and what problems beauty can cause within modern day society, I have decided it would be more accurate to title my project "Beauty in different Cultures" this will incl the problems, such as eating disorders, low self-esteem, celebirty culture.

Beauty is portrayed in the media in many way and in this video it shows some problems "ideal beauty" can cause.  This video gave me the idea to incorporate eating disorders into my project.

Chosen Project Idea!

I have chosen to do my project on Vanity!
I have chosen this subject as its a topic of interest and seems very relevant to our everyday lives.  I did my presentation in class on plastic surgery and this all links in.  I wanted to expand on my knowledge of the subject and find out exactly what people will go through to be "beautiful".
